ABOUT ME
Magen Check
Pharmacist by day +
Foodie by night
Welcome!
I'm Magen, the pharmacist and foodie behind Pharm To Table. I grew up in rural Eastern North Carolina (ENC) in a small place known as Pamlico County. I currently live in Greenville, NC (home of the East Carolina Pirates!) with my fiancé Alec. When I am not taking care of children (Pediatric Pharmacist here!), you will often find me in the kitchen cooking or visiting a local restaurant with Alec.
My love for food stems from my roots. I grew up in a family-owned local seafood business (Pamlico Packing Co., Inc.), and with a mom as a caterer. I remember being on the docks in the summer when the fresh shrimp would come in and working in our crab shedders during crab season. There is nothing quite like growing up with fresh seafood at your disposal- I must say I have often taken this for granted. I also remember attending too many catering events to count with my mom. Being honest here, she's the best cook that I know! Her love for cooking good, southern, local food growing up has helped shaped the person that I am today. I must say that I have not always cooked as much as I do today and I STILL call my mom on the regular for even the simplest questions in the kitchen. However, over my past four years of being a pharmacist I have slowly branched out in the kitchen to find my own style, mixing a little bit of southern with a healthy twist! Having lived in two different foodie cities for residency (Columbia, SC & Durham, NC) and now Greenville, NC, my love for food has been fueled even more by the local cuisine that the south has to offer.
Since moving back home to ENC, I have strived to eat much healthier. But, I still LOVE the rich flavors of the south- which is why I am constantly seeking out ways to make healthier versions of classic southern food. This usually means incorporating LOTS of veggies into my meals (Hello Cauliflower!) in addition to locally sourced meats & seafood. I am a strong believer that rich, flavorful food can also be healthy. After completing my first round of Whole30 In February 2020, I found out that I am most sensitive to Gluten-containing food (more on this later!). This, combined with my goal to be a healthier version of myself, has really pushed me to try new foods and step out of my comfort zone.
Not surprising, I also love to travel and bond over food with new and old friends! My inspiration for food often comes from a friend or family member, a recent place that I have traveled to or a local restaurant that I have dined at. Growing up, my house was always the life of the party, and still is today! My parents instilled in me at an early age the importance of bonding over food with the special people in your life. My hope is to share with you some healthy recipes and southern inspiration as you follow along with me on my journey through food and life. Enjoy!
